The name means "built by angels". The present church dates mainly from the 11th century, but it incorporates the apse of a much earlier basilica. Its mosaic, from the early Byzantine period, is one of very few of its age to survive, because most similar works elsewhere were destroyed during Iconoclasm.

The Virgin stands holding the Christ Child, flanked by the archangels Michael and Gabriel. The fine detail and colours are remarkable for their age.

Good to know

The mosaic is in the apse behind the iconostasis, so ask the attendant if you cannot see it clearly. Dress modestly.
