Pano Lefkara sits in the foothills between Larnaca and Limassol. Its narrow lanes are lined with stone houses, flower-filled balconies and workshops where women still stitch Lefkaritiko lace, a craft inscribed on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Local tradition says Leonardo da Vinci bought lace here for Milan Cathedral in 1481.
The Museum of Traditional Embroidery and Silversmith Work, in a restored mansion, explains the history of both crafts. The church of the Holy Cross has a fine carved iconostasis.
Good to know
Buy lace from workshops that make it locally. Weekday mornings are calmest before the tour coaches arrive.
