Avakas Gorge

A narrow limestone gorge on the edge of the Akamas, where cliffs close in to just a few metres apart. One of Cyprus's most rewarding short hikes.

Carved by the Avgas stream, the gorge runs inland from the coast near Agios Georgios Pegeias. The path follows the streambed between walls up to 30 metres high, and in the narrowest stretch you can almost touch both sides.

The walk to the narrows and back takes roughly two hours at an easy pace, with some scrambling over boulders. Look out for rare plants clinging to the rock and for birds of prey overhead.

Good to know

Wear sturdy shoes. Do not enter after heavy rain, because the gorge can flood and rockfall is possible.
