Stavrovouni, "Mountain of the Cross", is held to be one of the oldest monasteries in the world. Tradition says Saint Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, left a fragment of the True Cross here. The monastery follows a strict Athonite rule.
The winding road to the summit is an experience in itself. From the top, on a clear day, you can see Larnaca, the salt lake, the coast and the Troodos.
Good to know
Only men may enter the monastery itself. Photography inside is not allowed, and strict modest dress applies. Everyone can still enjoy the views from outside the walls.
